Asphalt Cost Estimation Guide

Estimate asphalt costs by tonne, square metre, or project with typical price ranges and the main cost drivers.

How Much Does Asphalt Cost?

Asphalt prices vary significantly by region, project size, and market conditions. Here are typical price ranges:

Asphalt Material Cost (Ex-plant)

RegionPrice per Tonne (USD)
USA (average)$80–$120
UK£70–£100
AustraliaAUD $120–$180
CanadaCAD $90–$140
India₹4,000–₹7,000

*Note: Prices fluctuate with crude oil prices. These are indicative values only.*

Total Installed Cost per Square Metre

ApplicationCost per m² (USD)
Driveway (supply & install)$25–$50
Parking lot (new)$20–$45
Road resurfacing (overlay)$15–$35
Highway (full construction)$80–$200+

What Affects Asphalt Cost?

1. Crude Oil Price

Bitumen is a petroleum product. When oil prices rise, asphalt costs rise.

2. Project Size

Larger projects get better unit rates. A 500 m² driveway costs more per m² than a 5,000 m² parking lot.

3. Accessibility & Haul Distance

Remote sites or areas far from asphalt plants increase transport costs.

4. Specification & Mix Design

Premium mixes (SMA, PMB-modified) cost 20–40% more than standard HMA.

5. Season

Asphalt must be laid above ~5°C. Peak season (summer) is busiest and sometimes costlier.

6. Subgrade Preparation

Poor subgrade means more base course material and earthwork — can double project costs.

How to Estimate Your Project Cost

Use our [Asphalt Calculator](/asphalt-calculator) with the cost input field to get an estimate:

  1. 1Enter your project dimensions (length, width, thickness)
  2. 2Select material type
  3. 3Enter your local price per tonne
  4. 4The calculator outputs: total material cost, weight, and truck loads

This gives you the material cost only. Add 40–80% for labour, equipment, and plant hire to get the total installed cost.

Cost-Saving Tips

  • Get multiple quotes — asphalt prices vary widely between contractors.
  • Avoid winter paving if possible — quality is better in warm weather.
  • Combine with neighbours — larger jobs get better rates.
  • Reuse milled asphalt (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement / RAP) — typically 20–30% cheaper and environmentally better.
  • Don't skimp on base course — poor base = expensive early failure.
